This paper examines retail structure and competitive interaction in a metropolitan area of Hampton Roads, Virginia, using GIS. Retail structure refers to the composition of retail stores by size, mix, and distribution. Two schools of thought on competitive interaction, symbiosis and Darwinism are tested using detailed retail store location data and ArcView Business Analyst and extensions.
