Abstract

Determining the Effects of Groundwater Development Scenarios in the Mojave River Basin
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Carolyn Nobel, John Anthony

The Mojave River groundwater basin, located near Los Angeles, has experienced an escalating demand for water due to increasing population in the region. The water rights in the basin are in contention and are currently the subject of a court case. ArcView 3.2 Spatial Analyst was used to calculate the historical groundwater drawdown due to groundwater withdrawals throughout the basin as well as to evaluate several different potential future groundwater development scenarios. Animations were created to display the drawdown over time across the basin, and the effects of different pumping scenarios in subregions in the basin were calculated to demonstrate that increased withdrawals in one subregion does not translate to lower groundwater levels throughout the basin. This project resulted in both a powerful communication tool and an illustrative technical analysis that is utilized in public meetings and as support for expert testimony.
