Abstract

Mapping the Benthic Habitats of Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands: A Spatial Framework for Coastal Zone Management
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Ken Buja, Matt Kendall, Curtis Kruer

NOAA's Biogeography Program has completed a project to map the distribution of coral reefs and other benthic habitats throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The benthic maps were created using visual interpretation of scanned aerial photographs and on-screen digitizing with a custom-built ArcView extension. After a careful review process including ground validation and peer review sessions with local experts, the benthic maps (along with the aerial photography) were served to the general public via ArcIMS. The maps will be used to support many activities including fishery management, coastal zone management, disaster mitigation, and academic and government research of the region's marine resources.
