Abstract

Enhancing a Computer Science Degree with GIS
Track: Universities and Higher Education
Author(s): Nancy Winiarz

As the computer industry becomes more integrated with GIS, creating an undergraduate degree that forms a strong foundation in both GIS and computer science will produce graduates who will be more desirable in the 21st century. Current undergraduate curriculum plans do not give computer science students the opportunity to learn GIS and focus solely on computer programming. New degree programs that join computer science classes with ones in advanced GIS skills would give students a better understanding of both computer programming fundamentals as well as database design, making them better prepared to join the GIS industry.
