Abstract

Geologic Hazard Identification Method Comparison: Durango East Quadrangle, Colorado
Track: Ski/Avalanche
Author(s): Jeffrey Young

Geologic hazards have undergone a definitional transition as we improve our understanding of natural processes. "Spatial decisions" involving hazardous areas must be approached within the parameters of the legal system and ever-improving geo spatial technologies to define and delineate hazards and associated risks. In support of planning and mitigation requirements, the Durango East Quadrangle is used as an example to illustrate what kinds of data and related analysis methods should be considered for inclusion in the planning process. Field methods are compared to high-resolution satellite data analysis. Changes to the hazard risk between 1976 and 2000 are also being characterized.
