Abstract

ArcIMS: Serving New York City by Land and Sea
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): James Labate

ArcIMS 3.1 is being employed in two separate New York City web sites. The first is for an ambitious water quality improvement program being implemented by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection--the Use and Standards Attainment Project (USA). Under the Federal Clean Water Act, New York City is obliged to improve the water quality of its many rivers, bays, creeks, and the harbor itself. ArcIMS is being used in the USA project as a public outreach tool. The second site focuses on uptown real estate. The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) is looking to bring business to Harlem, and ArcIMS is providing both the real estate community and the public at large with the geographic data needed to more clearly perceive and develop their communities.
