Abstract

Paper
Implementing Enterprise GIS Using ArcSDE in City Government
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Elizabeth Young, Brian Besier

The City of Fort Worth currently utilizes a distributed GIS. Departments are responsible for individual layers that are stored in varying locations and formats throughout the City. In an effort to provide access for all GIS users City-wide, the Information Technology Department has utilized ArcSDE to store, manage, and provide access to GIS data for both City employees and citizens. This paper presents the processes used in migrating from a shared file server and separate database to a single database instance storing all enterprise data. It will outline the actual steps taken for the project, the obstacles that were overcome, and potential areas of concerns for other cities.
