Abstract

United States Bird Avoidance Model (U.S. BAM)
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Matthew Bobo, Tim Beermann, Russell DeFusco

The BAM application enables military pilots and flight planners to view predictive risk surfaces and related geospatial themes to help minimize the risk of accidental loss of life and aircraft to bird strikes. The Web site provides information, a frequently asked questions list, and instructions and allows users to create and interact with maps that display the models along with other geospatial themes. The Internet Map Server application was created using ColdFusion and ArcIMS and is being evaluated by the FAA for use by commercial and general aviation. The application won the U.S. Air Force Research and Development Award for 1999.
