Abstract

Enterprise GIS for the U.S. Air Force: The USAF GeoBase
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Daniel Feinberg, Brian Cullis

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) is developing enterprise geospatial mapping and analysis capability to support basing operations worldwide. This capability is based primarily on GIS technology and is referred to as the USAF GeoBase. As USAF bases can be considered "military cities," GeoBase supports daily and crisis operations across all base functions and organizations. GeoBase improves base planning activities and raises command and control situational awareness. GeoBase integrates numerous nonspatial information systems to the map, thereby providing a single point of access to base information. This paper introduces key concepts of the GeoBase and discusses lessons learned by the USAF during GeoBase implementation and deployment. This presentation should be attended by Department of Defense employees and other organizations implementing enterprise GIS for large organizations.
