Abstract

Envisioning Neighborhoods: Facilitating Understanding by Organizing Multiple Maps and Other Media
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Earl Bossard

Presenting GIS maps as part of a comprehensive set of spatially organized media should be part of the solution for better understanding our world. The emerging field of information design is rapidly devising better ways to organize and present data. The Envisioning Neighborhoods technique uses small multiple GIS maps, charts, digital images, and tables to facilitate comparisons across space, time, and scale because context matters. To facilitate understanding and decisions regarding places, this paper introduces visual representational frameworks called schema. These schema can serve as templates into which maps and other media for places can be inserted.
