Abstract

Mobile GIS Solutions for Utility Operations Management
Track: Electric and Gas
Author(s): Christopher Stern, George Rofail

Competitive pressures continue to drive utilities to implement solutions for more efficient operations and improved customer service. To successfully achieve these improvements, organizations must implement GIS-based mobile applications that extend to their large "un-wired" workforce of mobile professionals and field service personnel. The recent emergence of technologies such as the wireless Internet, mobile Internet devices, and GIS and location-based services are allowing utilities to implement complete mobile operations management solutions. Using these systems, mobile workers can access mission-critical operating data and GIS-based maps and applications in the field on inexpensive wireless devices such as Palm-, PocketPC-, and WAP-based handhelds.

The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate the software and technologies available for implementing cost-effective mobile GIS solutions in service-based organizations with large mobile workforces. Specifically, this presentation will provide case studies that illustrate the wireless Internet, GIS and mobile device technology, location-based services, and strategies for successfully implementing mobile solutions.
