Abstract
Document Management and GIS Integration: Developing an Enterprise Solution
Track: New Technology and Technology Integration

The purpose of this paper is to discuss experiences gained through building the Rhode Island Department of Transportation document management system and its integration with the Department's Esri-based GIS. The document management system implementation involved the scanning and indexing of approximately 100,000 hard-copy plans kept in map drawers in the Department's Plan Room. The paper will include the following key components:
- Identifying the enterprise access requirements
- Designing the index database
- The scanning and indexing process
- Designing the integration components for the GIS using ArcIMS and the document management system
-Implementation of the applications.
