Abstract

GIS at Ground Zero: Perspectives of a Technical Information Officer
Track: Homeland Security
Author(s): Anthony Spicci

The World Trade Center event was, without doubt, a defining moment for our nation. It was also a defining moment for GIS as New York City mobilized its GIS data to assist in the effort. Lost in the media and publicity about the use of GIS in the Office of Emergency Management was the use of GIS at Ground Zero by rescue workers. This paper will discuss how a member of a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team used GIS.
