Abstract
Building an Internet-Based Fire Data Repository for Wildfire Management

Data acquisition and integration may be the single largest contribution needed to support fire related business. A significant challenge lies ahead in delivering the appropriate information to the proper party, at the appropriate time and place, in a usable form. Enhanced data access and scientifically based analysis tools are needed to aid fire response managers in decision making during incident and fuel management situations. The ability to exchange fire related data in a timely manner is critical to the safety of fire fighting staff. Region 5 of the USFS, in concert with Space Imaging, has embarked on the design and development This project proposes to develop a preliminary of an Internet based fire data repository to support fire incident and planning information exchange requirements. This repository will include a prototype ArcIMS based web site Mapping Service prototype web site that will demonstrate both 'Professional' and 'Public' access requirements to regional scale level fire incident and fuel management information. The repository prototype is being developed for the state of California to complement on-going development at the National scale. Access to spatial data, maps, reports and analysis tools will be a key component of the prototype site. The 'Professional Site' will incorporate the a data workflow model protocol to facilitate real time data download and upload capabilities to the fire data repository for operational fire staff. This paper will review issues and requirements defined during systems design, and present initial results from the prototype implementation.
