Abstract

4-D Data Visualization: Incorporating Time into 3-D Data Models
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Jonathan Boright

ArcView 3D Analyst is a powerful geospatial tool and has proven very successful in 3D visualization and analysis. In most cases, 3D data models are temporally static, representing only one instance in time. For many applications, the "missing" time dimension is of great significance, and there is a need to incorporate this fourth dimension into data visualization techniques. This paper discusses a method of addressing four-dimensional visualization as it was applied to two different realworld applications: groundwater modeling and air dispersion modeling. The method merges ArcView Spatial Analyst, ArcView 3D Analyst, and Adobe's LiveMotion to generate animation files depicting changes in 3D space over time.
