Abstract

Using 3D GIS, Video, and Animation for Environmental Restoration
Track: Environment Management
Author(s): Thomas Simon, Robert Aguirre, John Lindsay

NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration is employing GIS to support soil remediation and environmental restoration activities on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska. The GIS project incorporates the USEPA FIELDS (Fully Integrated Environmental Location Decision Support System) as a tool, supporting site inventories, characterization, and remedial design. FIELDS specifically contributes to sample design and interpolation of contaminant distribution including mass/volume calculations. Using ArcGIS 8.1, ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, and ArcScene (ArcGIS 3D Analyst), NOAA is modeling the contaminant plumes and creating 3D representations of the islands as well as 3D and digital video animations for presentation to management and the local Alaskan communities.
