Abstract

Automated Delineation of Urban/Rural Population
Track: Census and Geo-Demographics
Author(s): Ryan Short, Deanna Fowler

The U.S. Census Bureau developed ArcView and ArcInfo programs to delineate the Census 2000 urban/rural population. These programs use Census 2000 block and block group population data and Census 2000 TIGER/Line data to define urbanized areas (UA) and urban clusters (UC). This is the first time that the Census Bureau has automated the decennial urban/rural delineation process. The presentation will focus on how the software is used to define UAs and UCs, and the use of ArcInfo 8 to create coverages for the Nation's major airports as input to the process. The presentation will also discuss the difficulties in the development of the software due to the requirement that the software replicate the complex urban/rural criteria, and do so uniformly throughout the nation. The ArcView software application was developed by a consultant, ArcBridge Consulting and Training, Inc, while the ArcInfo software application was developed by Geography Division staff.
