Abstract
Online Line-of-Sight Analysis for Telecommunications

Modern broadband wireless telecommunication technologies, such as, MMDS, LMDS, and free space (laser) optics, are dependent on line of sight (LOS) between transmitter and receiver. This has challenged the GIS community to develop tools to determine line of sight without extensive fieldwork. This paper describes an online LOS application developed by Vexcel Corporation using ArcGIS and ArcSDE that supports rapid and accurate LOS analysis between any two locations in the United States. The system uses a seamless, nationwide, multiresolution database of digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthophotography. Highly accurate building elevation models make the LOS analysis in many large metro areas very precise.
