Abstract

Using ArcIMS to Deliver Renewable Energy Resource Mapping
Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation
Author(s): David Goode, Bob Parkinson

The Renewable Resource Atlas is an ArcIMS Software-based Internet GIS resource map for wind, geothermal, solar, and biomass for the 11 state western region consisting of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. This site also presents the existing transmission grid and identifies areas of transmission congestion. Political boundaries as well as the boundaries for special public lands where resource development should not occur are extremely useful in analysis. In addition, areas of renewable energy policy help show those areas where renewable energy policies are in place that provide incentives for renewable resource development. This combination, delivered in an intuitive way, will illustrate to resource planners, local communities, and politicians the viability of developing projects in specific locations. The Renewable Resource Atlas will become part of the Geography Network.
