Abstract

Providing Natural Resource Management Solutions using High Resolution Imagery
Track: Remote Sensing Imagery
Author(s): Don Rocha, Nancy Thomas

Recent advances in digital airborne sensors and satellite platforms make accurate, high resolution multispectral imagery available and open the door to a host of new applications that solve old problems. This presentation is an overview of the use of high resolution imagery and GIS to create a highly detailed and accurate base map for the Santa Clara County Park District (CA). In order to practice efficient management practices, including identification of rare, endangered, and invasive species, the District required an inventory of existing vegetation. An accurate map detailing more than 90 different vegetation associations and species was created from airborne digital imagery using automated processing techniques and extensive fieldwork. The resulting map product was then used as an input into further GIS analysis to create new tools for park management staff, finalized in ArcView project format.
