Abstract

When Bad Things Happen To Good Projects: Disastrous Effects and Strategies for Turning Things Around
Track: Electric and Gas
Author(s): Jeffrey Meyers

Implementing GIS is hard enough, without the added difficulties that today's dynamic world can impose on a project. In addition to the technical and political challenges that every IT project faces, today's environment includes rapidly changing markets, shifting corporate goals, and staff turnover that can introduce life-threatening obstacles into the best-planned project. In this paper, the author examines the common events and occurrences that can knock a project off track, and provides a discussion of how to address difficult problems and get back on the successful path.

Topics that will be discussed include:

- Reading the tea leaves; early warning signs and key indicators that your project is going awry.

- How could that happen? Maintaining direction during crisis times.

- Staying in alignment; communication strategies for inside and outside the core team

- Looking for help in the right places
