Zero to GIS in Thirty Days: McGuire AFB Case Study
Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
Author(s): Laura Silsbee, Matthew Bell

Representatives in the 305th Civil Engineering Squadron (CES) at McGuire Air Force Base (MAFB), New Jersey, working through a contract with PES, a MACTEC company, utilized a short-term funding opportunity to begin building the MAFB Geographic Information System (GIS). The project involved purchasing and implementing, ArcView 8.1, converting files from existing AutoCAD drawings, gathering stovepipe data, and formatting the GIS to be compliant with the CADD and GIS Technology Center's Spatial Data Standards (SDS), version 2.0. Actual GIS file development took place in December, 2001. This paper addresses what was accomplished, staffing requirements, lessons learned, perceived benefits, and next steps.
