Abstract

How Wild are the World's Wild Areas?
Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation
Author(s): Gillian Woolmer, Malanding Jaiteh

As part of a collaborative project, the Center for International Earth Science Information Network at Columbia University (CIESIN) and the

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) developed a global map of "Wild Areas". The "Wild Areas" were determined based on rules applied to nine global datasets on human habitation and access. In this paper we examined the structure and composition of these wild areas with view to develop a conservation reconnaissance and decision support tool for strategic planning of global conservation investments.
