Abstract
Renewable Energy Options in South Africa

A renewable energy database, consisting of biomass, hydro, solar, and winds energies, has been developed for South Africa. The paper describes the modelling methods and GIS techniques used to develop the database. Further, the database has been linked to a hybrid optimisation model(developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory). The linked model, called GISHOMER, will provide information on optimum hybrid configurations for unelectrified villages in South Africa. GISHOMER is developed in MapObjects and Delphi. The application will be described and demonstated during the paper presentation.
