Using GIS Techniques to Develop a Settlements System Model
Track: State and Local Government

Over the past three decades, it can certainly be argued that GIS has made significant strides in the presentation of data, particularly in the two-dimensional "map" and tabular formats. Therefore, this paper explores the potential of GIS as a basis for an urban planning modelling concept. We believe that the current powerful desktop GIS can be adapted and augmented to provide a computer-based support environment in which spatial data at the urban planning. Furthermore, analytical design tools can be imbedded in the GIS. Moreover, the researches fundamental aim is to produce innovative computer-based tools for develop a settlements system model in Egyptain arid zone. So, we present the role of GIS in urban planning, outlining what current desktop software is capable of and showing how various new techniques can be developed which make such software highly suitable as basis for understand settlements system in arid zone and build a model for it. Most software does not include any modelling capability other then through its functions for manipulation spatial data. For that reason, the research tries to build a model, which can use it for settlement system in arid zone. The integration of GIS, digital data management, simulation, and optimisation within a general framework is potentially capable of providing decision support tool to construct the settlements system modelling in arid zone.
