Abstract
GIS Lookup: Building a Virtual GIS Data Collection

GIS Lookup is a thesaurus-enabled data discovery system at North Carolina State University Libraries. The system supports lookup by feature type and attribute. Users may browse the thesaurus and jump to broader, narrower and related terms to find data. Links are provided to downloadable data, metadata, and interactive mapping resources associated with specific data resources. GIS Lookup incorporates data available onsite at NCSU as well as offsite data available on the Internet. The Web-based system is script-generated from a metadata database. The geographic focus of the collection is North Carolina, though national and global resources are included.
