Internet GIS Projects in India: Some Case Studies

There are various national initiatives taken by the Government of India in providing GIS solutions for decision-making in the process of planning and management of resources. With the advent of the Internet in the India there is a growing need to web enable the GIS query shells developed in various organisations under various projects so that a larger segment of the population can get benefit out of the process. Esri India is actively involved in most of the important Internet GIS projects in this country. The first Internet GIS project developed in India is for Andhra Pradesh Roads and Buildings department using ArcView IMS in 1997. Subsequently the developments of various projects for natural resources, Gujarat earthquake, real estate, tourism, and other vertical segments have been carried out using ArcIMS. This paper deals with the history of Internet GIS in India and select case studies with respect to their development, implementation process, issues, solutions, and other performance related activities in the Indian scenario.
