Abstract

Applications and 3D GIS Analysis of High Resolution LIDAR Data and Simultaneously Taken Digital Ortho Imagery
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Jörg Schaller, Uwe Lohr

Totally consistent 3D-GIS data can be produced by using the combination of elevation models from LIDAR technology and simultaneously taken georeferenced digital ortho-images. Such a data set provides the advantage that all data are taken at the same moment i.e. an operator does not run into the standard problem of having "old" elevation data and "new" ortho-images. Another advantage is that ortho-images can be rectified by taken the DSM (digital surface model) produced from the LIDAR data. In this way a true-ortho projection is done i.e. walls of buildings are invisible, buildings do not have a lean.

The TopoSys LIDAR is supplemented by a line scanner camera gathering image information in 4 spectral channels--red, green, blue, and near-infrared. When surveying from a survey altitude of about 1000 m above ground, pixel size is about 0.5 m. Image data may be delivered as true-colour and colour infrared image.

There are several applications which benefit from the combination of elevation models and imagery. One field of application is related to river basins e.g. to calculate hydrological models (runoff-models, irrigation models or flooding calculations). The database simultaneously allows creating hydrological management and action plans. Another successful application is in urban environment the determination of sealed areas and so the calculation of runoff to estimate the necessary sewer capacity of different parts in cities. The presentation provides an overview of the technical outline of the system and shows application of this combined technology by means of examples from recent project work:

- 3D City models and modelling of air pollution distribution

- Urban planning applications

- Hydrological applications

- Environmental and Nature protection applications
