Abstract

GIS as Used by the U.S. Border to Identify Organized Criminal Activity
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): James Sitton

The Laredo Sector Intelligence Unit of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) has been utilizing GIS and Spatial Analysis to identify organized criminal activity and how it relates to National Security in regards to our nation's borders. Using choropleth and thematic mapping we have been able to identify specific areas along the border that alien and narcotic smugglers tend to favor. We also employ the use of the animal movement extension for ArcView 3.x to show trends and patterns used by the same smugglers. Together with the help of CMAP of the National Institute of Justice, we have developed a tool to view the photographs of subjects arrested that are stored in the USBP National Database.
