GIS Without the G: Implementing Campus GIS Without Geography
Track: Education
Author(s): Dan Henderson

In the past three years, the UCSD Libraries have supported a rapidly growing GIS program that spans more than 25 departments and has close to 200 users of Esri software products, all without the benefit of a Geography Department on campus. This situation has allowed for creative solutions and collaborations between a variety of campus entities including but not limited to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Campus Planning, and the Urban Studies and Planning program. This presentation will outline the challenges and benefits of developing campus GIS capabilities and instruction without a Geography department.
