GIS in Reinsurance: Estimation of Losses Due to Natural Hazards
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Peter Frei, C. Graf

Natural catastrophe insurers and reinsurers must accomplish risk adjusted capital analysis, natural catastrophe pricing and event loss estimation. In order to perform these tasks successfully the knowledge of the geographic exposure is needed. Therefore, a GIS solution for managing geographic exposure has been developed. It is called PartnerRe Client Exposure Database (PRECED). With PRECED PartnerRe possesses a system that provides standardized methods for estimating expected losses and abandons the Excel spreadsheet era. The underwriter analyzes a specific contract in its geographic context. Further, PRECED enables company wide portfolio analysis. Event loss estimates can be generated rapidly due to the centralized data store. The foundation of PRECED is ArcSDE for storage and analysis of spatial data. ArcIMS is used to generate maps that are embedded in a VB and C# application that runs in a terminal server environment (Citrix). ArcGIS is used for special analysis.
