Kentucky: THE Commonwealth Map
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Lynne O'Connor

The Kentucky Office of Geographic Information is expanding Kentucky's statewide digital basemap. The Commonwealth Map is a twelve-layer basemap available free via the Internet for interactive mapping, geographic data querying, and downloading. As a collaborative effort of local, state, and federal partners, this initiative is designed to facilitate public, nonprofit, and private sector GIS development. The Commonwealth Map serves as Kentucky's contribution to The National Map. To be considered as a candidate for the basemap, a layer must have the potential for widespread use by a diversity of users. Data steward agencies are assuming responsibility for updating and maintaining each layer. Cooperative programs within and between local, state, and federal governments are encouraged and facilitated. Through this endeavor, GIS is becoming more accessible to the citizens of the Commonwealth, benefiting education, research, recreation, and economic development, as well as those who just love maps!
