Using GIS to Support ADS Prevention Efforts in San Diego
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Kenneth Gray

Abstract: The San Diego Quality of Life (QOL) Project integrates Geographic Information Systems and internet technology with demographic, economic, social, environmental, prevention, and health data, including 57 risk and protective factors. The risk and protective factors are organized hierarchically into a series of community domains. The QOL is an integral part of San Diego County Alcohol and Drug Service's prevention efforts. The cornerstone of the QOL is an ArcIMS interactive mapping service. This mapping service enables prevention specialists, researchers, and the public to access, query, map and download diverse data sets. Data sets can be displayed together interactively, allowing the user to visualize the spatial association of the variables and identify potential hot spots and problem areas. The data are available down to the Census tract level allowing users to build neighborhood profiles. Several years of data have been added to the data warehouse facilitating temporal analysis.
