Building Green Infrastructure Plans for SE Pennsyvlania Using Esri Products
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Clare Billett, Robert Cheetham

For the past three years, Natural Lands Trust has been developing a land assessment process called the SmartConservation Model. This model identifies, evaluates and prioritizes landscape conservation resources. An important component of this model is an open space and conservation protection plan--a 'Green Infrastructure' plan--for the 15 counties around Philadelphia. This plan is being developed as a series of hubs and corridors that reserve a critical network of the remaining undeveloped land with the highest conservation value. Esri's ArcGIS, ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension, and the ArcObjects framework are being used to automate the identification of the greenspace network in a process that combines an innovative series of landscape permeability layers with a sophisticated conservation resource mapping process and which ultimately deciphers between terrestrial and aquatic connectivity across the landscape.
