GIS Lessons for the World: The Global GIS Project
Track: Education
Author(s): Joseph Kerski

USGS scientists created seven CD-ROMs containing 37 data categories, ArcReader, and customized tools called the Global GIS project (www.globalgis.wr.usgs.gov). The data are distributed by world region at low cost through a USGS agreement with AGI (www.agiweb.org). The author created lessons focusing on the themes of earthquakes, minerals, population, and water resources to aid understanding of regions through GIS-based inquiry. Step-by-step lessons help users examine real-world, complex issues at a local to regional scale. They use digital maps, imagery, tables, and graphs to aid in appreciating regional diversity, understanding the importance of scale, seeing the interconnectedness of geographic issues, grappling with data, and making decisions that emulate those made daily around the world. Lessons adhere to national geography, technology, social studies, and science standards, include answer keys and assessments for evaluation, and are available through Esri's ArcLessons site (www.Esri.com/arclessons) and the USGS (rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/public/outreach/).
