Software Tools for Location of No-Passing Zones Using GPS Data
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Denis Leroux

Locating no-passing zones on two-lane highways is a difficult task because of the amount of time necessary to locate the zones and the hazard involved in working on the highways in the presence of moving traffic. This paper presents the development of a software for the location of passing/no-passing zones based on GIS and GPS technology. First, X,Y, and Z coordinates are collected along the road using a GPS antenna mounted on top of a moving vehicle, then a road profile is establish on both horizontal and vertical planes. This profile is used to calculate visibility for each GPS point on the road. Based on parameters like speed limit, minimum sight distance, target height, a passing/no-passing attribute is given to each GPS point and beginning and end of no-passing zones are located on the road. This application has been developed in Visual Basic using MapObjects ActiveX controls.
