Impacts of Historic Tsunamis on the Coastal Geomorphology of Hawaii
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Franziska Whelan

Historic and prehistoric tsunamis have significantly impacted the coastal geomorphology of the Hawaiian Islands. C14 dating of cobble and boulder sized deposits provide evidence of historic tsunami events. ArcGIS 8.3 Spatial and 3D Analyst Analyst were utilized to model tsunami events to include wave height and carrying capacity. Historic aerial imagery of the Hawaiian coastline was also analyzed to identify and correlate coastal geomorphic features, such as boulder/cobble deposits, to historic tsunami events.
