How to Build ArcGIS 9 Stovepipe Applications That Scale
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Noam Arbel

The advent of ArcGIS 9 will allow the creation of a class of lightweight, simple, Web and/or desktop applications using ArcObjects. It will then be viable to quickly create a set of applications that target specific needs in the enterprise (e.g., leak reporting, pole attachments, mapping services, etc.). But writing these dedicated, stovepipe applications can turn into a slippery slope. Cost of ownership, functionality creep, and cross training are just some of caveats that need to be taken into consideration. Thus it is important to build applications that are based on a consistent data and object models; reusable business components; and a consistent, expandable user interface.

This talk will focus on some key concepts in architecting discrete, dedicated applications in an enterprise environment, while trying to minimize the issues mentioned above.
