Development of a Highway Crash Data Analysis Program With GIS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Xiaoduan Sun

To develop efficient highway safety countermeasures, it is important to know how, where and when crashes happened. The accomplishment of such a task calls for an accurate crash recording system and a computerized crash analysis program. The objective of this presentation is twofold: introducing functionality of the data analysis program, and its applications. With highway control section as the smallest analysis unit, this program allows user to investigate crash from different perspectives and answer questions such as when is the most critical time period for a particular type of crash, where are the top ranking crash sites (segment or intersection) in terms of both total crash numbers and crash rate for collision with fixed objects or collision with moving vehicles. By dynamically linked to a GIS platform, the analysis results can be automatically displayed on a state highway map.
