Implementing an Agricultural Enterprise GIS
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): Marshall Beatty

Evans Properties Inc. is a family-owned farming operation located in central Florida with citrus, cattle, and real estate divisions. Agricultural producers are increasingly challenged to grow crops as efficiently as possible in order to maintain competitive in a global marketplace, yet at the same time, they must practice good land stewardship and satisfy regulations. To help meet those growing challenges, Evans has implemented an Enterprise Geographic Information System, utilizing an ArcSDE geodatabase, ArcIMS, ArcPad Mobile GIS, and the Esri Agricultural Spatial Data Model.

Five ArcIMS applications were developed: Worker Reentry Interval Safety Maps,Pesticide Application Tracker, Harvesting Tracker,Yield Tracker, and Field Profit/Loss.

Since implementation of the enterprise GIS system, farm employees are more efficient, data management is simplified, and users can focus more on their daily tasks of growing a healthy, safe crop in the most efficient manner possible.
