Mapping the National Bridge Inventory to a Common Base Network
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Stephen Lewis, Mike McCabe

For more than 20 years, state DOTs have been submitting bridge information to the FHWA. The resultant national database, the National Bridge Inventory (NBI), is used by the FHWA in determining bridge investment requirements. The FHWA has never had a program requirement to map the NBI data, and has never placed strict requirements on the states for providing location information for bridges. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), in partnership with the FHWA Office of Bridge Technology, completed a project to map all NBI bridges to a common base network, GDT's Dynamap. The bulk of the work was done through an automated conflation process. Bridges that could not be conflated were located using aerial photography. The resulting geocoded bridges were brought into ArcMap and used to fulfill a Congressional request for maps of deficient bridges. The project and its results will be described in this presentation.
