Analyzing Head and Neck Cancer Incidence and Mortality Using GIS
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Cedric Garland

Age-, race-, and gender-specific information for 20 major cancer sites of the head and neck was obtained for the 46 South Carolina counties during 1979-2000 (mortality) and 1996-2000 (incidence). More than eighty age-adjusted analyses of head and neck cancer incidence and mortality by county were completed for these major anatomical sites. Many detailed maps presenting age-adjusted mortality and incidence rates by quartile at the county-level were prepared using both color-coding methods and three-dimensional displays, allowing rapid assessment of statistically significant geographic patterns. Multiple county-based indicators of healthcare access (distribution of physicians, dentists, and general hospitals) were obtained along with indicators of education, income, poverty, air emissions, and water pollution. County-based survey results indicating use of alcohol, cigarettes, and chewing tobacco by teenage respondents (N=223,663 respondents) was obtained. Many multiple regression models have been developed to investigate the etiology of head and neck cancer in South Carolina.
