Indiana Geological Survey's Petroleum Database Management System: GIS and RDBMS
Track: Petroleum
Author(s): Premkrishnan Radhakrishnan, Charles Zuppann

Indiana's Petroleum Database Management System (PDMS) contains extensive oil-and-gas well data in a relatively complex structure. The PDMS integrates GIS and relational DBMS technologies to permit data viewing and editing through different interfaces for clients and administrators. The data are stored in two databases: a SQL Server database with numerous related tables that contain the well data, and an ArcSDE feature class which contains well location information and associated attributes. On the client side, a ColdFusion-based Web application allows viewing the tabular data, and an ArcIMS interface displays the spatial data. On the administrator side, a ColdFusion-based Web application was developed for editing tabular data and a Visual Basic extension for data editing in ArcMap. The applications are linked so that spatial changes are transmitted to SQL, and SQL modifications are updated in ArcSDE.
