Sustainable Management of Urban Rivers and Floodplains Using ArcGIS
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Andrew Tagg, Mark Scott, Tony Andrews

The SMURF (Sustainable Management of Urban Rivers and Floodplains) project aims to help coordinate the urban development planning process with management of the water environment by providing an ArcGIS software-based decision support system to be used by urban planners and water managers. The project will demonstrate this coordinated approach for the highly modified and degraded catchment of the River Tame in the West Midlands, UK. Each of the partner organisations (Environment Agency, Birmingham City Council, and Severn Trent Water) uses their own GIS, database, and modelling system that need to be incorporated into the overall planning system. Wallingford Software is integrating the existing systems, models, and data to allow a coordinated approach to planning not previously possible. The aim is that key information on flood risk, water quality, and ecology is readily available for locations within the catchment. The underlying hydrological and water quality models will be run automatically from ArcGIS.
