Innovative Enterprise GIS for Local Government
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Michael Schonlau

Implementing an enterprise GIS in local government presents a number of unique challenges. These challenges include departmental support, system integration, business process design, system architecture, application development, documentation, resources, security, training, and proper system management. However, the convergence of GIS with modern IT/IS technologies and standards offers limitless options for constructing a successful and flexible enterprise GIS environment. Pottawattamie County has completed the initial implementation of their "enterprise" GIS, utilizing solutions from various technology providers including Esri, Red Hat, Microsoft, and Varion Systems (a Division of GeoAnalytics, Inc. and an Esri Business Partner). County GIS and IT Departments have worked closely together to design an innovative and scalable architecture that will support the interests of all the County departments and the general public. The resulting geospatial environment illustrates the benefit of thoughtful design and planning. This presentation will detail the process used to implement Pottawattamie County's enterprise GIS.
