Feature Extraction From LIDAR With the Application of Radiowave Modeling
Track: Telecommunications
Author(s): Antony Roullier-Callaghan

New GIS concepts have been conceived through the advances in technology over the past few years. For example, feature extraction from airborne laser scanning data can be used for many applications including 3D Modelling and Wireless Communications Systems Design. A semi-automatic TOpographical Feature EXtraction System (TOFEXS) has been implemented to extract features from LIDAR data, with the aim of using the features in a RAdioWave Coverage And Planning Tool (RAWCAPT). The extracted features are validated against Ordnance Survey "LandLine.Plus" data and used in a basic Radiowave Propagation Model. The majority of the TOFEXS system has been implemented using various techniques and functions from ArcGIS 8.3, Esri ArcInfo Workstation software and ArcObjects. Future work includes a fully automated system using the new ArcGIS 9 Engine and improved visualisation using the 3D Analyst extension and the new ArcGlobe environment.
