Mapping and Predicting Community Discord in Fairfax County, Virginia
Track: Census and Geodemographics
Author(s): Scott Sizer

Fairfax County, Virginia, is a municipality developing programs to manage the transition of many neighborhoods from suburban to urban. This transition is accompanied by a variety of socioeconomic changes which stress neighborhoods and lead to increased neighborhood tension and community discord. Through the Strengthening Neighborhoods, Building Communities initiative, Fairfax County has identified and mapped those areas under stress. In addition, a stress index was created in order to predict future at risk neighborhoods. The index/model will be used to create geographically based teams to proactively engage neighborhoods to prevent community decline. A Fairfax County representative will discuss the entire life cycle of the project. This includes data collection and integration from a variety of agency and municipality sources, utilization of 2000 Census and municipality population and housing demographics to determine at risk neighborhoods, and integration of demographic information into a model to create a geographically based predictive model.
