ArcGIS Supports Wildland Fire Planning for Communities, States, and Regions
Track: EMS, Fire and Disaster Management
Author(s): David Buckley

The 2003 Wildfires in California highlighted the need for more comprehensive wildland fire planning. Wildland fire planning can take place at the community, state or regional level. In this presentation, we will describe a wildland fire risk assessment methodology that can be used to assess fire risk at the landscape level for states or groups of states, categorize communities at risk across a state or region, and support community scale hazard assessment and the development of fire mitigation plans. This methodology utilizes the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension, and is embodied in an ArcGIS application that integrates high resolution IKONOS imagery with the assessment and mitigation planning process. This approach illustrates the power of GIS for reducing the impact of wildfire on human lives and property.
