Geocoding: Way Beyond the Centerline in NYC
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Marsha Kaunitz, Michael Wiley

Has anyone in your organization wanted you to map features to the sidewalk edge, center of sidewalk, building center, etc.? New York City, like many other municipalities, has street trees, public pay telephones, fire hydrants, and other "street furniture". City officials wanted these, and many other features mapped precisely in front of the address specified in their various management systems. Mapping to the centerline or an offset from the centerline was not sufficient. The Automated Mapping Application was built with ArcObjects and Visual Basic. This application also accesses a legacy system/database running on an S/390 mainframe for specific data to be used in the mapping application. These tabular data are related to NYC's spatial data to form the basis for mapping to a user specified location. To-date the application has mapped 517,000 street trees, 31,000 telephones, and 98,000 fire hydrants among many other tabular databases.
