A Statewide GPS Dataset: Geocoded Road Centerlines
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Kelly Green

Under the U.S. Department of Transportation Damage Prevention Grant Program, the State of Utah's Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC) is developing a statewide GPS road centerline dataset for Blue Stakes of Utah. It will also be available free to all government entities, 911 dispatch centers, the private sector, and the public. Blue Stakes of Utah uses software that allows excavators and utility members to provide geographic coordinates to identify both the location of underground facilities and the dig site. With this ability, it is critical to utilize a database that is spatially accurate within one meter. Currently, most of the data used by Blue Stakes of Utah has a twelve-meter accuracy. Therefore, a complete and spatially accurate dataset designed to maximize geocoding accuracy and match rates will be a valuable asset for the GIS community.
